Module 6: Sampling Fisheries
This module provides a practical framework for sampling syngnathids in fisheries. It focuses on seahorses, but the methods described herein can be adapted for other syngnathid species of interest. This module explains why fisheries data are valuable, outlines the strengths and limitations of different approaches to sampling fisheries, and guides users in selecting appropriate survey types, locations, and timing.
The module also addresses key considerations such as ethics, sub-sampling large catches, and the need to accurately quantify fishing effort. Detailed protocols are provided for collecting data through direct observation of catch and landings, as well as interviews and questionnaires.
Together, these methods support consistent, reliable data collection to inform assessments of seahorse populations, fisheries interactions, and conservation needs.
