Global IUCN Red List assessments
The IUCN Red List follows a well-established, quantitative protocol that applies universally to all species — marine or terrestrial, animal, fungi or plant. Using this protocol, volunteer experts — including members of IUCN SSC Specialist Groups — collaborate with IUCN staff and other specialists to assess global populations. These assessments help catalyze conservation action for threatened species.
As an IUCN Red List Authority, we ensure that all species within our jurisdiction — all fishes in the order Syngnathiformes — are assessed against the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria at least once every ten years, and ideally every five.
