Module 8: Handling and assessing wild syngnathids

This module provides guidance on the safe and effective handling and assessment of wild syngnathids. It outlines when physical interaction is justified and how to plan, prepare, and train for fieldwork to minimize stress to animals and damage to habitats, including the use of non-invasive tools such as photography.

The module details standardized methods for capturing, handling, measuring, and releasing individuals, including key metrics such as size, weight, sex, and reproductive condition. It also covers approaches for identifying species and individuals, and for designing recapture surveys. In addition, it introduces methods for assessing habitat use, including holdfast associations, transects, and quadrats.

Consistent protocols improve data quality and comparability, supporting reliable assessments of syngnathid populations, biology, and habitat relationships for conservation and management.
